SMED - training

Except for the introductory training for management, SMED training is always the part of SMED workshops – reduction of changeover for a given machine.

Training programme:

1. Introduction

  • what does changeover time reduction mean?
  • why is SMED so important for your company,
  • problems with long production batches,
  • SMED history (Shingeo Shingo)
  • SMED system – structure, schedule

Exercise: SMED mini-simulation (beads)

2. Beginning of SMED implementation

  • basic steps in the process of equipment changeover,
  • operation analysis in changeover process,
  • 2 stages in SMED:
    - identification of external setups,
    - identification of internal setups.

Exercises: stimulating creativity

3. Separating internal tasks from external ones

  • description of internal tasks
  • list of unnecessary operations
  • improving the transport of parts and tools.

4. Changing internal tasks into external ones

  • techniques of gathering information (videotapes, spaghetti diagrams, etc.),
  • standardization of functions.

5. Improving all changeover steps

  • changes in internal tasks,
  • changes in external tasks,
  • introducing parallel tasks,
  • adjustment elimination.

6. Teamwork and SMED analysis methods

  • SMED team
  • methodology of creativity stimulation
  • brainstorms, timeline, auxiliary forms
  • organization and conducting SMED session

project duration: 2-3 days (theoretical introduction – 1 day + SMED workshops in a production hall – 1 to 2 days)

programme objective: to prepare people who will plan SMED in a company, introduction for members of SMED teams.

trainers: course is conducted by people having practice in manufacturing companies. They have been involved in implementing SMED in their companies, and now they can share their experience. This training is co-conducted by a psychologist, who carries out exercises developing creativity, and teach teamwork as well as moderation during brainstorming.

methodology: theoretical introductory part, exercises, discussions, solution of problems, discussion of case studies.

content of training materials: manual prepared individually for every customer, films from SMED sessions, SMED standard binder received after workshops. 

certificates: Basic SMED issued by Polish Productivity Center.
