Kaizen means the philosophy of Continuous Improvement.

Kaizen Blitz workshops will convince your co-workers that it is really easy. They will become convinced that Kaizen Blitz does not refer to revolutionary changes or inventions which one can go to Patent Office with. An idea, which saves a penny or a second, is just enough to have Kaizen, that is, improvements appearing everyday and invented by exactly everybody. It will suddenly turn out that a company has saved millions. Kaizen Blitz is a few days’ (2-10 days) workshop covering a small production area. You will completely change this area through training, analyses, mapping and brainstorming. Then, you will put your ideas into effect, and represent your achievements in front of the company management.

What advantages does Kaizen Blitz bring?

  • Kaizen Blitz is a great idea at the early beginning of Your Lean. Why? For psychological reasons. Co-workers, whom you will invite to participate in Kaizen Blitz, will focus all their efforts on a narrow field and a specific objective. They will not have time for such thought as “why I will not manage”. Before they delay the issue, the positive results will just appear.   The co-workers will be delighted and eager for further work on improvements.
  • In the workplace, the lead time and the number of work in process will diminish, so you can expect specific savings and your bosses’ delight.   When the management sees financial benefits, the way for further implementation of Lean Manufacturing is open.
  • You will increase the productivity as the workers from Kaizen Blitz area will spend less time on activities which do not add the value.
  • You should also get back the spare area in the production hall.

But remember not to confine your activities to Kaizen Blitz. It is quite a superficial tool, which   does not give time for deep consideration and the real, natural development of Your Lean.

Focusing on the specific part, you can also disrupt a bit the main process. Goldratt said once,  “Locally optimal system is not the optimal system.” Kaizen Blitz will last a week. At the same time:

  1. You will form a group up to 20 people. Half of participants shall be the workers from the treated area, and half the internal or external customers of this area (operators, quality workers, planners, managers, workers from Maintenance Department); you choose the place and objectives of the workshop.
  2. You will undergo intensive training for about 12 hours.
  3. You all will analyse the place of action with films, drafts and data. You all will prepare ideas for improvement with Problem-Solving Elements (e.g. brainstorming).
  4. Using 5S elements, you will clean, paint and rearrange the place of action.
    You will test the implementation of some ideas.
  5. By recording the process and making measurements, you will check whether it works.
  6. You will set a standard for these ideas, which have been verified.
  7. Now, an important issue -   a presentation in front of the management and a bit of celebration at a piece of cake and a cup of coffee at work or after – without defining a type of refreshments.
  8. Follow-up. You create the plan for implementing these which you did not manage to implement during workshops.  Monitor the progress.
