It is an essential base of Lean Manufacturing. If you look at schemes of production systems in international companies, 5S is usually placed at their bottom. 5S refutes Theory of Evolution. A human being is not descended from an ape but a hamster. We continuously collect unnecessary things and information which, after some time, paralyse our work and life. What should you do to leave chaos and avoid activities which do not add value to the process?

According to 5S, making 5 steps is sufficient: Seri/ Sort, Seiton/ Set In Order, Seiso/ Shine, Seiketsu/ Standardize and Sitsuke/ Sustain. If you want to read more about 5S, visit our library.

After implementing 5S, you can expect the following :

1. The change in your workers’ attitude. They will take more care about their workplace, and certainly they will be more devoted to your Company.

2. Passing by workshops and offices, you will see clean, tided workstands with only necessary things.

3. The hall will talk to you due to visual management. You will be more and more rarely checking data in documents.

4. Time Savings. Nobody will have to look for anything.

5. First ideas on improving workstands will appear. You have to notice them and appreciate. Just one mistake, and you will have problems with your staff involvement in future.

4. First Lean structure (leaders, coordinator, teams, support group, etc.) will be formed. Leaders will learn how to delegate rights and work with the group of co-workers.

5S will be implemented in your company for a few months, …. even a year.

Meanwhile, you will

• select leaders and a coordinator,
• establish project structure and schedule,
• conduct training for leaders,
• prepare and conduct workshops for workers and activities related to each of 5 steps,
• put into practice 5S maintaining and internal auditing system.
